How are you today?

I’m doing well. I’m about to start a busy week at work: four intense days are ahead of me. Unfortunately, the day began with torrential rain. It’s never pleasant to set off in a downpour, especially when you know you have a demanding week ahead. Luckily, once I get to work, I’ll be indoors and dry for the rest of the day. You have to look on the bright side!

After a scorching summer, you can feel autumn finally settling in around here. The temperatures are starting to change, the days are getting shorter, and the rain is gradually returning. Autumn will eventually give way to winter, but for now, we’re entering the rainy season. Even if these heavy showers can make getting around difficult, they’re also a reminder that the seasons are moving on.

After the droughts of the past few months, a little rain won’t do nature any harm. The ground has been under a lot of strain, plants have suffered, and some water reserves have fallen considerably. So, even if the rain sometimes comes down too heavily or at the wrong time, we can hope it will help nature recover and replenish our precious water supplies. Of course, it would be better to have steady, regular rainfall than too much all at once. With the climate so out of balance, it’s hard to know what to expect.

I can’t help thinking about the part we play in this situation. Our lifestyles affect the environment, even through ordinary, everyday choices. And I have to admit that I’m writing this online, which also relies on devices and servers that use energy. Still, I don’t think consumers should bear all the responsibility or feel guilty about every little thing they do.

For example, when we simply want to buy fruit and vegetables, we sometimes find them wrapped in several layers of plastic. We can try to make more thoughtful choices, but we need to have options in the first place. Producers, suppliers, and shops should take responsibility too, especially by cutting down on excessive packaging and offering more loose produce or packaging that is kinder to the environment. That would already be a step in the right direction.

We could also encourage people to buy more seasonal fruit and vegetables. They’re often better suited to the time of year, and choosing them can make us think more about how our food is grown and transported. Of course, everyone has different budgets and access to different shops, but making these choices easier and more affordable would help a lot of people change some of their habits.

Then there’s food waste, which I sometimes find infuriating. We produce huge amounts of food, yet some of it ends up in the bin before anyone has even had a chance to eat it. It’s especially hard to accept when you think about animals being raised and slaughtered only for their meat to be thrown away. Imagine spending your whole life in a warehouse, never getting to experience anything else, only to be killed and eventually thrown away because no one bought you. It’s a harsh image, but it shows just how senseless and cruel food waste can be.

Perhaps we need to learn how to shop more carefully, store food properly, and make better use of what we already have. Shops could also do more to manage their stock and make products nearing their use-by date easier to buy, instead of throwing them away. These may seem like small changes, but if individuals and businesses alike paid a little more attention, we could reduce at least some of the waste.

Finally, I think we need to stop putting all the weight of these problems on people who are simply trying to get through everyday life. Of course, everyone can do their part, but businesses, producers, and politicians also have an essential role to play. We need practical solutions, more responsible choices, and products that are less harmful to the environment. We can’t keep asking people to make an effort while giving them so few alternatives.

Anyway, I’m not going to change the world from behind my keyboard, especially since there are so many problems and no magic solution. But I think we can at least talk about them, ask questions, and try to do a little better whenever we can. For today, though, I’ll just hope the rain does some good for nature—and be glad that I’ll be dry at work!
