Gone with the Wind is a 1939 American epic historical romance film adapted from the 1936 novel by Margaret Mitchell. The film was produced by David O. Selznick and directed by Victor Fleming, with a screenplay by Sidney Howard. The film stars Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O'Hara and Clark Gable as Rhett Butler and follows Scarlett's life during the Civil War and Reconstruction periods.
The film has been criticized for perpetuating Civil War myths and black stereotypes. However, it has also been credited with triggering changes in the way African Americans were depicted cinematically. Gone with the Wind is regarded as one of the greatest films of aLL time and was one of the twenty-five inaugural films selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the United States Library of Congress in 1989 for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
The film has a runtime of 3 hours and 42 minutes. It won eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress for Vivien Leigh. Gone with the Wind is available to watch with a subscription on Max, rent on Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, Apple TV, or buy on Amazon Prime Pideo, Vudu, Apple TV.
Plot
Gone with the Wind is an epic tale of a woman's life during one of the most tumultuous periods in America's history. The story follows Scarlett O'Hara, a young, innocent Southern belle, from her days on a feudalistic plantation to the war-torn streets of Atlanta, through her first love, three marriages, and from the utmost luxury to absolute starvation and poverty. The plot of the film is set during the American Civil War and Reconstruction Era, and it depicts Scarlett's struggles to survive and rebuild her life after the war.
The film's plot is complex and covers a wide range of themes, including love, war, loss, and survival. Scarlett's character is central to the plot, and her journey is one of the most compelling aspects of the film. She is a strong-willed and determined woman who will do anything to survive and protect her family, even if it means marrying her sister's beau or murdering a Yankee thief.
In the end, Scarlett's noble aspiration for a better future seems to have gone with the wind. The final shot of the film shows Scarlett silhouetted against Tara as the sun sets over the hill, having arrived back at her home, alone and uncertain about her future.
