The 1962 film Mutiny on the Bounty is an American Technicolor epic historical drama directed by Lewis Milestone and starring Marlon Brando, Trevor Howard, and Richard Harris. It tells a heavily fictionalized story of the real-life mutiny led by Fletcher Christian against William Bligh, captain of HMAV Bounty, in 1789.

The film was partly shot on location in the South Pacific and was the first motion picture filmed in the Ultra Panavision 70 widescreen process. Despite being panned by critics, the film was a box office flop, losing more than $6 million (equivalent to $58 million in 2022). The 1935 version of the film Mutiny on the Bounty is also based on the same novel and was a huge box office success, becoming the highest-grossing film of 1935 and one of MGM's biggest hits of the 1930s.

Plot

There are two films titled "Mutiny on the Bounty," one released in 1935 and the other in 1962. The 1935 film tells the )story of Captain Bligh and Fletcher Christian aboard HMS Bounty for a voyage to Tahiti. Bligh proves to be a brutal tyrant, and after six pleasant months on Tahiti, Christian leads the crew to mutiny on the homeward voyage. Even though Byam takes no part in the mutiny, he must defend himself against charges that he supported Christian.

The 1962 film follows English Captain Bligh and his crew on a sea voyage to transport breadfruit to Jamaica. Bligh abuses his crew and officers enough to anger his 1st Lieutenant, Fletcher Christian. When they reach their destination, tensions ease, and the crew luxuriates in island life until Bligh claps several men in irons for trying to desert. On the trip home, further indignities inspire Christian to stage a mutiny and set Bligh and those loyal to him afloat in a rowboat.
