Spice is the debut studio album by English girl group Spice Girls. The album was released in Japan on September 19, 1996 and in the United Kingdom on November 4, 1996 by Virgin Records. The album was recorded between 1995 and 1996 at Olympic Studios in Barnes, London, and Strongroom Studios in Shoreditch, London. It was produced by Absolute, Matt Rowe and Richard Stannard.
Spice is a pop album that incorporates styles such as dance, R&B and hip hop. This album is considered the album that brought back teen pop and opened the doors to a wave of young pop artists. The Spice album focused conceptually on the idea of Girl Power, and the hype surrounding the group was compared to Beatlemania.
Spice was a huge commercial success worldwide, topping the charts in more than 17 countries around the world. It is also certified Multi-Platinum in 27 countries, Platinum in 14 countries, and Gold in three countries, including 10x Platinum in the United Kingdom and Canada, eight-times Platinum in Europe, and seven-times Platinum in the United States. Spice became the world's top-selling album of 1997, selling 19 million copies in one year. The album has sold a total of 23 million copies worldwide, becoming the best-selling album by a girl group in music history and one of the best-selling albums of all time.
Four singles were released from the Spice album. The lead single "Wannabe" reached number one in 37 countries and has sold over 7 million copies worldwide, becoming one of the best-selling singles of all time as of 2010. The next two singles, "Say You'll Be There" and "2 Become 1", reached number one in 53 countries, while the other single, "Who Do You Think You Are", reached the top 20 on the charts in Europe, New Zealand and Australia. Additionally, in the United Kingdom, all four singles peaked at number one on the UK Singles Chart, and on the Billboard Hot 100, the album spawned three top-five singles. Spice Girls were undoubtedly the most popular girl group of the 90s, it was possible to hear their songs almost everywhere, on TV, on radio, at parties, in stadiums. They came out with a really great album and gained a lot of fans. In short, I think the Spice Girls were the queens of 90s pop.
Frankly, I'm not a big fan of the pop genre, but I listen to any song that pleases my ears and depends on my mood at that moment. All the members of Spice Girls have their own lines in the songs, they have full teamwork and spirit, so I've always appreciated them. The songs I listen to most in this album are; "Wannabe", "Say You'll Be There" and "Who Do You Think You Are"
