The most frustrating part is how oblivious Conrad is to Maeve's betrayal even when she refuses to show him a text from Richie about their children, COME ON!!! this guy is supposed to be this ruthless crime boss who's survived decades in the underworld but he can't see that his wife is playing him and ok Im fine with the story be like this is how their entire life has been but she is just going too far how, isnt she? Then there is this contrast between these fumbling subplots and Harry's action sequences is jarring, Tom Hardy gets to look cool taking down thugs while everyone else gets stuck in boring conversations that go nowhere, the action scenes themselves are well shot but they feel disconnected from the rest of the show almost like they belong to a different one like Harry can be a spin off or even a better series that I'd rather be watching instead.
This episode highlighted everything thats been bothering me about Mobland from the beginning, the show wants us to care about these characters and their conflicts without putting in the work to make them less straight forward or their motivations believable, it wants to shock us with brutal violence and betrayals without earning those moments through careful storytelling, it wants to be taken seriously as a crime drama while relying on cliches and conveniences that undermine any sense of realism or stakes. The series seems be ok to coast and rely from the back of its cast stars rather than challenging them with a story worthy of their talents, Hardy is basically going through the motions as Harry, a character who seems to exist solely to look cool in action sequences and Brosnan's Conrad is all bossy and no substance, making speeches about his ruthlessness while being completely clueless about what's happening right under his roof, to be clear I don't hate Mobland I still watch it every Sunday which is why I had still give it a 7/10. I still believe the series still has enough to keep me watching because some, a little bit of the action is very entertaining and occasionally a performance breaks through the average bar they have set, but its frustrating to see a show with this much talent and budget consistently settling for being just okay when it could be great, maybe the finale will pull everything together in a satisfying way but after seven episodes of missed opportunities and half realized ideas my expectations are not so high.
