Born: October 7, 1905 – Died: February 18, 1977
Andy Devine, a renowned figure in American cinema, was born on October 7, 1905, in Flagstaff, Arizona. Raised in Kingman, Arizona, Andy was the son of Thomas Devine Jr., an Irish-American hotel operator, and his wife, Amy. His journey in life took him from an athletic youth to a beloved comic character actor in American films, leaving a lasting imprint on the entertainment industry.
Early Life and Career
Andy's early years were marked by athletic prowess, notably in football. He played semi-professionally under the alias Jeremiah Schwartz, a decision aimed at preserving his eligibility for college football. His educational journey took him through St. Mary & St. Benedict College, Arizona State Teacher's College, and Santa Clara University.
His foray into acting began with small roles in silent films, but his football background helped him land a significant part in a talkie. What could have been a setback, his uniquely raspy voice—resulting from a childhood injury—became his trademark. Devine's first major success came with the film Stagecoach (1939), where he played the character Buck. This role not only showcased his talent but also solidified his place in Hollywood.
His rise to stardom was further propelled by his role as Jingles P. Jones in the TV and radio series "Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok" in the 1950s. This period marked a significant growth in his fame. Andy Devine was also known for his work in "Robin Hood" (1973) as Friar Tuck and "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" (1962) as Link Appleyard. Throughout his career, he received four major awards, underscoring his impact and talent in the industry.
Off-screen, Devine's life was just as colorful. He was married to Dorothy Devine from October 28, 1933, until his death in 1977, and the couple had two children. Aside from acting, Andy had a range of interests and was known for his involvement in various philanthropic endeavors.
Andy Devine's legacy in Hollywood is enduring. His unique voice, versatile acting skills, and warm on-screen presence made him an icon in the entertainment industry. His contribution to the industry goes beyond his roles; he inspired many and brought joy to audiences across generations. His journey from a football-playing youth to a Hollywood star is a testament to his talent and determination, making him a standout figure in the annals of cinema history.
