Denzel Washington was born in Mount Vernon, New York, on December 28, 1954. His mother, Lennis, was a beautician, and his father, Denzel, was a Pentecostal minister. Washington has two older siblings.
Washington attended Fordham University, where he studied journalism. He also began acting in student productions during his time at Fordham. After graduating from college, Washington moved to San Francisco to study acting at the American Conservatory Theater.
Washington made his professional acting debut in 1977, appearing in the television show Wilma. He gained his first major success in the early 1980s with the television series St. Elsewhere.
He made his film debut in 1981 with the comedy Carbon Copy. His breakthrough film role came in 1987 with Cry Freedom, in which he played South African anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko.
Washington has won numerous awards for his work, including two Academy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, and a Tony Award. He is considered to be one of the greatest actors of his generation.
