Born: April 12, 1899 – Died: December 1, 1955

Chief Thundercloud, originally named Victor Daniels, emerged as a notable figure in early Hollywood, especially for his portrayals in Western films. Born in Muskogee, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma, USA, he was the eldest of nine children. His diverse cultural background and upbringing in Arizona greatly influenced his later career choices.

Early Life and Career

Before entering the movie industry, Thundercloud's life was as varied and vibrant as the roles he would later play. He claimed to have attended the University of Arizona at Tucson, although this was later disputed. His early careerwas spent working on cattle ranches and rodeos, as well as a mining foreman, boxer, and guide, which no doubt contributed to his rugged, authentic screen presence.

Thundercloud's journey into acting began as a stuntman in 1929, and by 1935, he had been cast in acting roles, many uncredited, under the Hollywood-given name "Chief Thundercloud." He played strong and often grim characters in "B" westerns and is best remembered for his portrayal of the faithful sidekick "Tonto" in the serial "The Lone Ranger."

Thundercloud brought a dignified presence to his roles, often playing tribe members and chiefs. He appeared in various TV shows including "Death Valley Days," "The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin," and "Buffalo Bill, Jr."

His personal life remained as intriguing as his professional one. He was married twice, with his second wife Frances, a former singer, and their two children surviving him after his death due to stomach cancer in 1955. Chief Thundercloud’s contributions to the film industry lie not just in his memorable roles but also in paving the way for future generations of Native American actors in Hollywood. His legacy is that of a trailblazer who broke barriers and brought a unique authenticity to the screen.
